Jelavic could be a rangers player soon
« on: July 31, 2010, 12:52:22 AM »
"Smith confirmed last night he is closing in on Rapid Vienna's Nikica Jelavic. The Austrians are demanding £3.25 million - even although the Croation striker is in the final year of his contract. Rangers won't pay that amount but it is clear the manager sees Jelavic as a player who would bolster his squad"

Smith said - "Of course we have an interest in him. Negotitations are going a bit slower than we had hoped but we are working on that".

Out of all the ones we have been linked with i really hope we get this guy signed, he looks a cracking player

It doesnt say he is GOING to sign. But Walter has said they are working on getting him. So it seems they might be closing in on signing him. Therefore he is quite close to signing and that is what the poster has said.

I'm also a beleiver in thedeal being signed, sealed and standing on ther steps at Ibrox, but it would be agood signing if we managed to negotiate a deal.

£2+ Million would be my guess.

WALTER SMITH says Rangers will have new players on board before the   start of the new season.
And the Ibrox manager insists the club are working round the clock   to make sure the right kind of players are added to strengthen Rangers'   bid to win three in a row.
Honduran World Cup striker Georgie Welcome is due to arrive at   Murray Park on Monday for a week's trial.
And Smith last night confirmed he is closing in on Rapid Vienna's   Nikica Jelavic.
But the Austrians are demanding £3.25million - even though the   Croatian striker is in the final year of his contract.
Rangers won't pay that amount but it is clear the manager sees   Jelavic as a player who would bolster his squad.
Smith said: "Of course we have an interest in him. Negotiations are   going a bit slower than we had hoped but we are working on that."
Although well aware of septic's transfer activities and anxiety   among his own club's support, Smith stressed Rangers fans shouldn't   panic as the transfer window will be open for weeks yet.
He said: "We actually have a month left. We know that and there is   no reason to rush in and sign players just to look busy.
"Because we are out here in Australia that doesn't mean we aren't   working on deals. But I'm not going to dive in and take people on just   for the sake of it.
"We've done that before and it won't happen again. I know what we   have to do. I want players in and we'll have a couple at least before   the season starts.
"We don't have the money for a huge spend but we will have two or   possibly three signed in time."
The wonderfully-named Welcome, 25, had been linked with a move to   Ibrox before the South African showpiece started in June.
His club Motagua have confirmed they have allowed the £500,000-rated   hitman to travel to Glasgow after Welcome played in their CONCACAF   Champions League 1-0 defeat in Toronto.
A spokesman for Motagua said: "The player will travel to Scotland   next week to have tests and discussions with Rangers."
Welcome has scored just three times in 17 internationals for   Honduras but he is rated one of Central America's top prospects.
Smith also pointed out that - unlike septic manager Neil Lennon - he   hasn't had to act now because Rangers won automatic entry to the   Champions League group stages along with the SPL championship.
The Rangers manager also believes they have a slight advantage   through not having to start their season as early as septic, Motherwell   and Hibs.
Smith added: "Having to play in Europe is a disadvantage to our   clubs, I don't think there is much doubt about that.
"It's tough when you have to play such important matches so early   but it's always the same.
"So quite a few teams have had shorter pre-seasons and when you have   to do that then it must put you at a slight disadvantage.
"There's not much any of us can do about this situation and we also   have to try to improve the country's co-efficient.
"We talk about winter breaks, changing to summer football and   everything else - but we've been talking for how many years now? It's   not going to happen is it?
"We'll remain as we are and try to make the best of it. But there is   an element of tension when you have to tackle these qualifiers.
"I know what it's like trying to get preseason training just right   but knowing you have these vital matches looming.
"That's where we have a slight benefit this time because we can work   away without worrying about getting through these games which are vital   financially for everyone.
"We had that with Kaunas and it is difficult. We had played 69   matches the season before and I think we suffered a bit of a hangover   from that campaign.
"But whatever the reasons we lost and that wasn't an easy thing to   deal with. If you don't get through those qualifying rounds a lot of the   team's confidence can be knocked out and that can have an effect."
septic are 3-0 down in their Champions League qualifier against   Braga but Smith was careful to point out Lennon's side aren't out yet.
He said: "You can't rule them out. They'll be determined to hold on   because no one wants to be in a situation where they don't have European   football.
"It can put a strain on resources but you'd still rather be in the   competition."
While in Australia for Sydney's Festival of Football the former   Scotland manager has had another opportunity to study this country's   attitude towards sport - and admits to being envious.
Everywhere you go around this city there are playing fields and   arenas for just about every sport. And Smith wonders if Scotland will   ever wake up to the potential benefits of taking sport seriously.
He added: "The first thing that hits you is the emphasis they put on   sport. We could and should pick up on that.
"At a time when we are all worried about childhood obesity and the   general health of the people perhaps the politicians should consider   sport a bit more.
"Australians place that great emphasis on kids playing and enjoying   their sport and that's a great thing.
"But if you narrow it down to just our sport you see that while   there is a generation of football players finishing up, such as Craig   Moore, Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell, there is another layer of players   emerging.
"I know from having spoken to people here that they believe they   have a really strong group of younger players coming through again.   That's because they put so much into their sport.
"That's what we should all be doing. But that's for another day.   Right now we and the others have to make the most of what we have and   where we live.
"It isn't ideal but it isn't bad either and a run in Europe helps   lift everyone's spirits. That's what we'll be hoping for as well as   bringing in those new faces."

blackburn are in worse trouble than us, they have to sell players b4 they will be allowed to buy any1 so i cant see a deal being all but done with them.

however i wouldnt be surprised if some other team does come in and hijack the transfer.

like others have said i have no faith in any rumours/bids etc until the player has signed an actual contract for the gers
