Motherwell v Rangers – SPL

Following a disappointing draw away to St Mirren in the 5th round of the Active Nations Scottish Cup, Rangers look to get back to winning ways in the SPL against the “Steelmen” of Motherwell. The match is due to kick of at Fir Park at 19.45 on Wednesday 10th February.

The match promises to be a difficult encounter as a resurgent Motherwell, under new manager Craig Brown, look to cement their place in the top six of the SPL, ready for the split in mid April.

Rangers will have skipper David Weir available for the tie following his suspension for last weekends cup tie. The questions remains who will, if anyone, make way for the veteran defender. I personally would like to see more of the Wilson Bougherra partnership as I see this as the future of the heart of our defence. Although last weekends game was by no means a classic, the two defenders did seem to build a reasonable understanding between each other. That said I will not in anyway be surprised if Wilson is relegated to the bench with Weir teaming up with Bougherra.

Reports from Ibrox also suggest that we will have Sasa Papac available as he returns from a knock he received a week or so ago. This may mean that Broadfoot will be dropped to the bench with Steven Whittaker returning to the right back slot. If this happens this may well open up a position for John Fleck, who was dropped for the trip to Paisley, in the midfield.

The most exciting prospect will be the return of Messrs Miller and Boyd to spear head our attack. The two players have been out for a number of weeks and made substitute appearances in the game against St Mirren. Boyd and Miller, until their injuries, were scoring goals for fun and have made a brilliant partnership this season. You could argue that this is the best attacking pairing since McCoist and Hately.

With a number of stars returning we can hope to see the style of play that we witnessed during the month of December, where Rangers were truly devastating. I await kick off with eager anticipation.
