SCOTTISH TEAMS IN EUROPE

uefa cl

In the wake of Scottish footballs very poor showing in Europe I felt the need to write this.  An unimpressive run for Rangers in the Champions League, and also a poor showing by celtic, falkirk, aberdeen, hearts and motherwell in the europa league makes me wonder “Is it time we woke up and realised Scottish football is no longer the standard it used to be?” Are Rangers and celtic going to be the Urineas, Debrecens etc of the Champions league a few years down the line?

if we look at the games from this years SPL teams in Europe:

Played Won Draw Lost
Rangers 5 0 2 3
Celtic 8 1 2 5
Falkirk 2 1 0 1
Aberdeen 2 0 0 2
Motherwell 6 2 0 4
Hearts 2 1 0 2

These results show that  between the six teams there has been 25 games  played. A total of  5 wins 4 draws and 16 losses is a very very poor record for any nation to have. What will this do to the co-efficient?

The answer is it will be detrimental for us, knock us down and if Scottish football continues down the same road we move further and further down.  This would have the effect that the  League Champions will even have to qualify for the champions league group stages.

With the record this year shown above this makes the future for Scottish clubs in European competitions look bleak. In my opinion this is going to make it even harder for Rangers and celtic to get anywhere in any European competition and we will soon enough be the teams that when drawn out the pot  people will ask  ”who the hell are they? thats good who cares theres 6 easy points.”  I really do worry that this will soon be the case!

Was the 2007/08 season the rise before the fall of Scottish football?
In my honest opinion yes, with the national team doing well under former rangers boss Alex McCleish narrowly missing out on euro 2008 qualification. Aberdeen did well to get to the last 32 of the UEFA Cup, celtic got to the last 16 of the Champions League and Rangers got to the Uefa Cup Final.

I would like to hear others thoughts on this.
